Openness contaminates corruption. RIOC, the city, the state and real estate kept their options open by fogging over the reality they knew until, ahem, the final Southtown building was complete and a new moneymaker was needed.

Theo, I confess I do not visit the Islander as faithfully as perhaps I should. There is not always much there for me, but every so often Rick turns over a stone and finds the piece of the puzzle everyone else has been walking past.

His newly published MOU may be one of those pieces: 3 million square feet and roughly 3,500 apartments contemplated at Coler, another 400 at the Steam Plant site, all sitting behind a demolition we were asked to understand principally as an emergency. And then there is the quiet chatter about who may ultimately have a hand in what comes next. Let us simply say some of the names being whispered feel rather related.

Your budget told us the demolition had a past. Rick may just have shown us considerably more of its future.
